The Economist reported on the closure of a sausage factory in Germany due to the crisis

The German Eberswalder Wurstwerke plant, which was the largest meat producer in Europe in the 1980s, is shutting down at the end of February. This was reported by the British magazine The Economist.

According to the publication, at the end of the twentieth century, the company employed about 3 thousand people, and its own clinic, library and restaurant were located on an area of 65 hectares. Now the factory belongs to the West German meat processor Tönnies, one of the largest in Germany.

Employees found out about the closure half an hour before the information was shown on TV, the magazine writes. One of the workers at the company store near the entrance complained that the new owner promised to invest in production when he bought the plant in 2024, but did not do so.

According to The Economist, the closure of the company takes place against the backdrop of a prolonged recession in the German economy, which has been stagnating for three years. The number of bankruptcies in December 2025 increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2024. The total number of corporate bankruptcies in Germany in 2025 exceeded 17.6 thousand, becoming the highest figure in 20 years.
