The Russian Ambassador spoke about the situation with the consideration of the case of the AN-124 aircraft in Canada.

The issue of the confiscated An-124 aircraft of the Russian airline Volga-Dnepr is still being considered in the courts of Canada, Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov said on February 16.

"The issue is still being considered in the courts of Canada. The party is the owner, Volga-Dnepr Company. As a state, we are not involved in this proceeding and cannot comment on the legal details of the ongoing litigation," the diplomat said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Indirectly, He added that before talking about concrete steps on the part of Moscow, it is necessary to wait for Canada to exhaust all legal possibilities. At the same time, the head of the diplomatic mission stressed that Russia's principled position remains unchanged.

Stepanov stressed that Russia has repeatedly conveyed to the Canadian authorities its unwavering position regarding the inadmissibility of unilateral confiscation. According to him, Ottawa deliberately lured the Volga-Dnepr plane in order to seize it, and then retroactively fabricated pseudo-grounds for its arrest and seizure.

He added that such actions are unacceptable and illegal, and the aircraft must be unconditionally returned to its owner.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced the transfer of the Russian aircraft to Kiev on June 10 last year. The decision was the result of his negotiations with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

Later, on June 15, 2025, the deputy head of the Canadian diplomatic mission in Moscow, Brian Ebel, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, he was demarched because of Ottawa's intention to confiscate the An-124 aircraft.

The AN-124 aircraft has been in Canada since 2022, which banned Russian aviation flights after the start of a special military operation. Canada passed a law on confiscation, according to which it seized the plane.
