Fraudsters are increasingly trying to gain full control over customer accounts rather than bank card details. This was reported on February 15 by the newspaper Kommersant, citing data from the Bank of Russia and experts.

According to the regulator, in the fourth quarter of 2025, the volume of theft using bank cards decreased by 7% compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the number of thefts through remote banking systems and electronic wallets has increased.

"Previously, fraudsters hunted for specific card data for online purchases (numbers, CVV code), today the goals are full access to account management for legal entities and VIP clients," said Timur Aitov, head of the financial security commission of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in an interview with the publication.

According to him, schemes using RBS make it possible to steal large amounts and substitute standard payment orders. Through the mechanisms of fast payment systems, attackers promptly withdraw and cash out funds through drops.

Aitov noted that large-scale crimes involving the use of RBS and SBP are usually accompanied by preliminary intelligence and the use of high-level social engineering, including calls from persons posing as high-ranking officials.

Elena Golyaeva, business architect of the Banking and Finance Department at Reksoft, attributed the change in the fraud structure to the fact that new schemes are easier to scale. According to her, the attackers are shifting the focus to the customer's behavior, while banks' ability to automatically block transactions in such cases is limited.

Fedor Muzalevsky, Director of the RTM Group Technical Department, expressed the opinion that this year schemes using SBP will prevail over fraud with bank cards.

On February 15, the Directorate for Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the GUMVD of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region reported that fraudsters began using a new method of deception, luring victims of codes to access their data. The scammers pose as a delivery service and claim to have sent a birthday present. They ask the recipient to confirm receipt of the parcel by requesting a "reconciliation code." However, it is actually a one-time SMS password that is used to log into online banking, Gosuslugi, or other personal accounts.
