On February 15, political scientist Yuri Svetov, in an interview with Izvestia, commented on the situation with a German icebreaker stuck in the Arctic ice, saying that the Russian icebreaking fleet has sufficient capacity and is able to pass through the thickest ice.

Earlier in the day, a German icebreaker sent to escort a gas carrier in the Arctic got stuck in ice in the waters of the Arctic Ocean.

"Only the Russian Federation has the most modern icebreaking fleet. We currently have 43 icebreaking vessels. Eight of them are nuclear icebreakers," he said.

According to the political scientist, both the European states and the United States do not have such powerful nuclear icebreakers. He noted that it is the Russian side that has the technical capabilities to pass through the ice that other countries cannot.

Svetov said that the Europeans are "shooting themselves in the foot" by imposing sanctions against Russia. In his opinion, restrictions against the Rosatom state Corporation and its divisions do not allow helping European states.

"Why should we help them? That's why we always try... Let's help them. Let them feel what it's like without Russia," the political scientist said.

Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, said on January 27 that the Russian nuclear icebreaking fleet plays a special role in the context of developing relations with the United States. He also noted that Russia is the only country that has been building submarines entirely from titanium for decades.
