The Pentagon is considering severing ties with the company Anthropic, which specializes in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems and the Claude program, due to disagreements over restrictions on the use of its models by American troops. This was reported on February 14 by the Axios portal, citing a senior administration official.

According to the publication, the Pentagon wants to use AI in the military sphere, including in the development of weapons. The company Anthropic opposed this application of its product. Difficult negotiations have been going on for about a month, the portal writes.

"All options are being considered, including reducing or completely severing the partnership with Anthropic. But an orderly replacement will be required if we consider this to be the right decision," a source told Axios.

The Wall Street Journal reported on February 13 that the Pentagon used the Claude AI program for an operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. A representative of Anthropic said that the company could not comment on the use of Claude in specific classified operations, adding that any use of AI must comply with strict internal rules of use.
