- The geographer reminded about the safety rules when fishing on ice at the end of winter
At the end of winter, the ice becomes especially dangerous due to thaws and sudden pressure drops, which makes fishing risky in places where the ice thickness does not reach 10 cm. This was announced on February 14 by the Deputy Dean for Scientific Work of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, geographer Peter Krylov.
"Ice with a thickness of 10 cm in fresh water and 15 cm in salt water is considered safe. But this is not a guarantee of safety, especially in the mouths of rivers, on the current, off the coast, where there are springs or drains, in places of thickets of reeds or near trees, where the ice is always weaker," the expert said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».
He added that the above-zero temperatures, which last for several days, make the ice even more brittle. Krylov also explained how to visually assess the strength of the ice. Durable ice is always transparent, with a bluish or greenish tinge, while white ice is twice as weak.
"Gray, matte white, or ice with a yellow tint is the most dangerous, it can crack instantly without making a sound," the geographer warns.
Krylov advised fishermen to closely monitor the weather before going out on the ice and refrain from fishing if conditions worsen. He also recommended avoiding areas of ice that have changed color.
If the person still fell through the ice, Krylov told how to act.
"Don't panic, stabilize your breathing and call for help. Spread your arms and brace yourself against the edges of the ice floe so as not to go headlong. Lie down horizontally and gradually put one foot on the ice, then the other, helping by turning the body," he said. On shore, it is important to immediately take off wet clothes and change to dry ones, as a damp cloth can trap cold, creating a greenhouse effect.
On January 9, Elena Kosheleva, Director of Sberbank Insurance projects, said that outdoor activities are becoming more popular in winter, from ice skating and skiing to family walks and games in the snow. But at the same time, the risk of injury increases. According to the company, Russians most often choose cross-country skiing (22%), winter hiking (18%) and ice skating (12%). Sledging is used by 9% of the respondents, while tubing, downhill skiing, snowboarding and winter fishing received 7% each.
