Armenian Church calls case against Catholicos illegal
The Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) has called the criminal case against Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II and the ban on his departure from the country illegal and politically motivated. This was reported on February 14 on the website of the AAC press service.
"These actions against the Armenian patriarch are unjustified, illegal and have a vivid political character. With this clearly unconstitutional and illegal interference in the internal life of the church, the government is obstructing the pastoral activities of the Grand Patriarch," the publication says.
The Church called for an immediate review of the "illegal" decisions against Garegin II, as well as six bishops, members of the Supreme Spiritual Council and the secretary, who, according to representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church, are causing a split in Armenian society.
Lawyer Ara Zohrabyan said on February 14 that the Armenian Prosecutor's Office had opened a criminal case against Garegin II on charges of obstructing the execution of a judicial act. The lawyer also noted that the Catholicos was banned from leaving the country, which, in his opinion, is an attempt to disrupt the upcoming bishops' conference to be held in Austria.
