- Orban, amid a quarrel with Zelensky, declared the impossibility of Ukraine's accession to the EU
On February 14, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, responding to an insult addressed to him by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, said that this gesture once again indicates Ukraine's inability to join the European Union (EU).
"Dear Volodymyr Zelensky, thank you for another campaign speech in support of Ukraine's accession to the European Union...> We are talking about the future of Hungary, Ukraine and Europe. That is why you cannot become a member of the European Union," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Accordingly, Orban responded to a speech delivered by the Ukrainian president, in which he pointed to the alleged desire of the Hungarian leader to "grow a belly" rather than increase the army. The Hungarian Prime Minister clarified that in matters of politics it is not about their personal relationship with Zelensky, therefore, the uttered phrase will allow the Hungarian people to see the situation more clearly.
The Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported earlier that day that Kiev's plans to join the EU could be disrupted due to a quarrel between the Hungarian and Ukrainian leaders. It was noted that relations between Hungary and Ukraine are becoming increasingly tough.
Orban said on February 7 that his state would not allow itself to be treated arrogantly by the Kiev authorities. He clarified that the time when Budapest looked weak had passed and stressed that all neighboring countries should note the changes that had taken place. At the same time, he stated that Ukraine had turned into an enemy of Hungary, and later, on February 13, pointed to attempts by this state to enter the EU "on a horse backwards."
