US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's speech at the Munich Security Conference caused discontent among European diplomats, who considered it aimed at an American audience rather than at allies. This was reported on February 14 by the Financial Times newspaper.

In his speech, Rubio said that the United States does not seek to break with its allies, but, on the contrary, wants to revive and strengthen its long-standing friendship with Europe. He stressed that the United States intends to work with Europe on the path to new prosperity, despite the differences between the parties. The Secretary of State also noted that the United States is concerned about the future of Europe and is interested in a strong Europe, believing that the destinies of both sides "will always be intertwined."

However, according to some participants of the conference, his speech did not give the expected answers and was received with restraint.

"This is not the answer we were looking for," an anonymous German diplomat said, expressing the opinion that Rubio's speech was addressed to a domestic audience of the United States rather than European allies.

On the same day, Rubio said that the idea of a world order without borders and replacing the national interests of countries with global ones, which emerged as a result of the euphoria of the West after the Cold War, had cost Western countries dearly. According to him, the United States and its allies transferred sovereignty to international institutions, and many even invested in social security, which negatively affected their ability to effectively defend themselves.
