- France pointed out that the EU was falling into a trap after the US refused to finance Kiev
The European Union (EU) has been trapped by the need to single-handedly finance Kiev after the United States withdrew its support for Ukraine. This was announced on February 14 by the former director of the French Foreign Intelligence Service (DGSE), Alain Jouyet.
According to him, at the beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) exerted strong pressure on Russia, but after Donald Trump became head of the White House, the situation changed.
"NATO is still under American command, but Trump wants the Europeans to take more responsibility for the alliance. This means that we will have to finance and make efforts. <...> Americans no longer want to pay. The European Union is trapped. Now he will have to actually support Ukraine alone," said Jouye.
He added that Europe has a problem — the need to help rebuild Ukraine. As the former DGSE director noted, the European side cannot help Kiev too much, as this will "ruin" it.
"Opening borders for Ukrainian products means destroying all European agriculture. It's impossible. So the question is: on the one hand, the restoration of Ukraine, on the other — the security of Europe," he said.
Jouyet also clarified that France had made loud promises to send a large amount of equipment and money to Ukraine, but the real figures were different in the end.
"There have been efforts, but far from those that were announced. Because it's impossible: if I have €100 in my pocket, I can't spend €200," the former director of the foreign intelligence service added.
The details of the story can be found in the information and analytical program "Izvestia. The main thing" on Channel Five on Saturday, February 14th.
The German newspaper Berliner Zeitung reported on February 11 that the leader of the German BSW party ("Sarah Wagenknecht Union — for Reason and Justice") Sarah Wagenknecht criticized Berlin's financial support for Ukraine. According to her, instead of actively working on a peaceful settlement and promoting compromise solutions, including with the participation of the Ukrainian leadership, the German authorities continue to allocate new aid packages to Kiev.
