The somnologist talked about the benefits of the phone before bedtime
Using gadgets, in particular checking social networks, before going to bed for a modern person has a calming effect rather than an exciting one. Mikhail Poluektov, somnologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, head of the Department of Sleep Medicine of the Sechenov Moscow State Medical University No. 3, President of the Russian Society of Somnologists, told about this in the new issue of the Izvestia podcast. In his opinion, it may be worth reviewing the rules of sleep hygiene, which recommend avoiding viewing digital media an hour or two before a night's rest.
"How can an ordinary person, who is used to being in touch with everyone, turn off the phone immediately before going to bed? He won't be able to sleep. The world has changed. If earlier using gadgets, watching TV, listening to the radio was a distracting and exciting factor, now I will say that using social networks before going to bed is a calming factor," the specialist explained.
This is a new reality that we will have to come to terms with, the somnologist is sure. Scrolling through social media before going to bed has long been a familiar ritual for many. Repeating the same actions to the same extent every day gives you a sense of calm, Poluektov argues.
"Ritualizing actions gives a sense of predictability, there is no unnecessary strain on the nervous system, it does not need to re-scan this situation, assess the level of danger. It's the same every day," said the podcast guest.
Earlier, somnologist Cherkasova said that waking up early can be a sign of depression. According to her, this phenomenon can be a wake-up call on weekends when there are no other distractions.
