German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that he is in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on the creation of a joint European nuclear umbrella. This was reported on February 13 by the Reuters news agency.

"We are not doing this by writing off NATO. We are doing this by creating a solid, self—sufficient European pillar within the framework of the alliance," Merz said at the opening of the Munich Security Conference.

The German Chancellor also called on his European colleagues to restore relations with the United States.
