There are many contradictions and disagreements between European countries on security issues, Dmitry Suslov, Deputy Director of the Central Research Institute of Higher School of Economics, told Izvestia.

One of the key factors is relations with Russia and its perception, the political scientist believes. For example, the countries of Scandinavia and the Baltic States, Poland and Germany may see Russia as a threat, but Russia is not one for the states of Southern Europe and certain countries of Eastern Europe. The second contradiction lies in their attitude towards the United States.

"The countries that are most susceptible to Russophobia and hysteria towards Russia are more likely to accept American hegemony, and they advocate for large—scale U.S. participation in European affairs and in the field of European security," the expert believes.

The less European countries are afraid of Russia, the more actively they advocate for European autonomy, he believes.
