The scientific heritage left by one of the founders of nuclear energy, Academician Anatoly Alexandrov, allows Russia to continue exploring the Arctic and will contribute to ensuring safety in the waters of the World Ocean. Patrushev noted that in the 1930s, Alexandrov and his colleague Igor Kurchatov developed a method to protect ships from magnetic mines.

"This work is a unique example of how science has saved thousands of lives, ensured the combat capability of boats and allowed us to preserve the core of the Black Sea, Baltic and Northern Fleets," he said at a meeting of the Scientific Expert Council of the Maritime Collegium, the main topic of which was the 123rd anniversary of the scientist's birth.

Patrushev added that in the post-war years, Alexandrov, being the head of a number of scientific programs, continued to make a fundamental contribution to the development of the Navy. It was under the supervision of the academician that the power plants for the icebreakers Arctic and Siberia were created. In total, eight nuclear icebreakers were built with the participation of the scientist, as well as a unique lighter carrier Sevmorput.

"The development of Academician Alexandrov's scientific heritage will allow Russia to further explore the Arctic latitudes and ensure safety in the oceans," said the Chairman of the Maritime Board.
