- Kovalchuk spoke about the West's use of the Chernobyl accident to undermine the USSR
The West used the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant) in 1986 to undermine the Soviet Union. This was announced on February 13 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NRC), during a meeting of the Scientific and Expert Council of the Maritime Collegium.
"This catastrophe was used by the West to deliver the first crushing blow to the Soviet Union," he said.
According to the scientist, they tried to portray the Soviet Union as a supposedly dangerous, illiterate power, unable to maintain its own nuclear installations. Western countries suggested that they should be afraid of the USSR and disarm it.
At the same time, the head of the Kurchatov Institute noted that in the West they practically do not discuss the consequences of the accident at the Japanese Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in 2011.
"There are consequences in terms of contamination of the sea, marine food. Huge! Nobody says anything. Everything is quiet, peaceful, and tight-lipped. And here it was pulled out in full," Kovalchuk emphasized.
In April last year, military engineer Anatoly Yakub, who participated in the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident, shared his memories of the first days of work at the accident site. According to him, despite the severity of the situation, it was even pleasant to work — the country's leadership, including members of the Politburo, provided the liquidators with everything they needed: equipment, materials, people and financing. This made it possible to perform tasks quickly and with full efficiency.
