In winter, men's health is threatened by cooling of the pelvic area, decreased physical activity, high-calorie food and vitamin D deficiency. Artur Bogatyrev, a urologist and andrologist at the SM Clinic Center for Reproductive Health, told Izvestia on February 15.

"It's easy enough to catch a cold in the cold season, but for men, it's the cooling of the pelvic area that is particularly dangerous. Prolonged exposure to the cold, especially with insufficiently warm clothes, can provoke inflammatory processes of the genitourinary system — cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis," Bogatyrev noted.

According to the doctor, it is recommended not to neglect warm clothes, choose a multi-layered principle of equipment, use thermal underwear and insulated trousers if you have to stay outside for a long time.

Another significant factor is a decrease in physical activity. Short daylight hours and cold weather often lead to men spending more time indoors. Lack of mobility combined with an unbalanced diet contributes to stagnation of blood in the pelvic organs, which can impair blood supply to the prostate gland.

"Even in winter, it is important to remain physically active. Walking, gym workouts or home exercises are suitable — the main thing is that the movement is regular," the specialist emphasized.

In addition, the urologist noted that in the cold season, many people begin to consume high-calorie, fatty and sweet foods more often. However, with a deficiency of fiber and vitamins, this can lead to weight gain and general deterioration of well-being, which affects the state of the male reproductive system.

"The diet should remain balanced: more vegetables and fruits, enough protein, restriction of fast food and sugary drinks," Bogatyrev advised.

In addition, the risk of vitamin D deficiency increases in winter, which is involved in the regulation of many processes, including the functioning of the reproductive system. The issue of taking supplements should be resolved jointly with a doctor, since self-administration may be unsafe, the expert added.

The specialist also recalled the impact of bad habits. During the holidays and long winter evenings, men are more likely to indulge in excessive alcohol consumption and continue to smoke, which negatively affects the condition of blood vessels and can worsen erectile function.

"It is important to observe moderation and, if possible, give up bad habits, since they have a direct impact on the cardiovascular system and men's health in general," said the urologist-andrologist.

According to him, another common mistake is ignoring the symptoms. In winter, malaise is often attributed to a cold or overwork, which is why the visit to the doctor is postponed. This increases the risk of complications.

"The cold season requires careful attention to oneself. Warm clothes, exercise, balanced nutrition, rejection of bad habits and timely diagnosis help to maintain health. Prevention is always more effective than the treatment of already neglected conditions," concluded Bogatyrev.

On January 12, Dmitry Korolev, a urologist, andrologist, associate professor at the Institute of Urology and Human Reproductive Health at Sechenov University, said that the causes of male infertility may be genetic abnormalities or obesity. In addition, he noted that currently 17.6% of the world's population is considered infertile. Currently, 50% of the male population is infertile.
