Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for the resumption of dialogue with Russia on nuclear arms control issues. He stated this on February 13.

"I believe that we need to talk to Russia again, relying on force and convincing deterrence. We must find a way to build a new arms control order," Stoltenberg said in an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper.

According to him, if such agreements were possible during the Cold War, then their achievement remains realistic in the future. The former Secretary General also expressed regret that, in his assessment, the previous system of arms control agreements, formed during and after the Cold War, had virtually ceased to exist.

Commenting on the possible reduction of Europe's dependence on the American nuclear potential, Stoltenberg stressed that "NATO's nuclear deterrence is based on nuclear weapons in Europe."

"There are doctrines, command structures, and control mechanisms. We must not undermine deterrence. Britain and France are members of NATO, and their nuclear weapons contribute to the alliance's collective defense capability," he added.

Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, said on January 31 that the rapid advance of the Russian Armed Forces is forcing the North Atlantic Alliance to seek a compromise. According to him, NATO is becoming more active and begins to take actions to resolve the conflict only at those moments when Russia is rapidly advancing at the front in order to prevent Russian control over strategic territories.
