The first US military man who participated in Operation Southern Spear to combat drug cartels in the Caribbean region was killed. This was reported on February 12 by the American television channel CBS, citing a message from the United States Marine Corps.

Ofora, a Florida marine, was pronounced dead on February 10 after a 72–hour search and rescue operation yielded no results, the Marine Corps said. It is reported that he fell overboard on the evening of February 7," the publication says.

Five ships of the US Navy, a rigid-hulled inflatable boat and 10 aircraft participated in the search for the fallen military. The Marine Corps said the circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

The day before, The Wall Street Journal newspaper wrote that two people were injured in a collision between two US Navy ships in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of South America. It is noted that the Arleigh Burke model USS Truxtun and USNS Supply — a destroyer and a combat support ship, respectively - were involved in the incident.

US President Donald Trump said on January 24 that the United States is considering the possibility of launching ground strikes against drug cartels without territorial restrictions. The journalists clarified whether they were talking about potential strikes anywhere, including in Mexico, Venezuela or Colombia. In response to this question, Trump said, "Anywhere."
