- The Permanent Representative reported on the appeal of the Russian Federation to the OSCE due to violations in Latvia
Russia has appealed to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) over violations of the rights of the Russian-speaking population in Latvia. This was announced on February 13 by Russia's Permanent Representative to the OSCE Dmitry Polyansky.
"We have already sent [the OSCE] there. — Ed.) the relevant appeal, and we were confirmed that this topic has been taken into account. A similar appeal was sent in the case of Alexander Gaponenko (A Latvian human rights defender who advocates for the rights of Russian speakers, convicted in Latvia. — Ed.)," Polyansky said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He noted that the Latvian delegation immediately responded to the Russian side's appeal that such statements were allegedly propaganda by Russia. According to the Latvian representatives, the rights of the Russian-speaking population are not infringed upon and no deportations are taking place.
Polyansky said that Latvia and Estonia are used to the lack of criticism from the OSCE. He also expressed hope that "this approach will be reversed."
In October last year, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk, reported on the assistance of the Russian authorities to 800 citizens of the Russian Federation who were deported from Latvia due to ignorance of the official language. In addition, she recalled that since 2006, there has been a state program to assist in the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad to Russia.
Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 13 that Russian citizens whose stay in Latvia expires can return to Russia and build their lives in the country.
