Spain expressed dissatisfaction with Italy, as a preliminary meeting of several leaders of the European Union (EU) was held before the informal summit in Belgium, regarding this format as undermining pan-European principles. On February 12, Onda Cero radio station reported this, citing officials.

"Spain expressed to Italy its dissatisfaction with the holding of the meeting before the informal summit of the leaders of the European Union, held this Thursday in Belgium. Spain believes that this meeting, organized jointly with Germany and Belgium, undermines the basic principles of the functioning of the EU," the publication says.

The informal summit was aimed at discussing the deepening of the single market and increasing the competitiveness of the European economy at a time when the EU is seeking to strengthen its industrial and strategic positions.

The Corriere della Sera newspaper reported on February 12 that former Italian Prime Minister and former head of the European Central Bank (ECB) Mario Draghi called on EU leaders to act quickly in order to save the collapsing economy. It was noted that at the EU summit, the former Italian Prime Minister advised intervening in the process of reducing energy prices, mobilizing existing savings and promoting enhanced cooperation between the member states of the association.
