The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, burst into tears after meeting with Ukrainian athlete Vladislav Geraskevich, who plays for his country's national skeleton team, who was disqualified for wanting to use a helmet with a political message. This was announced on February 12 by IOC Communications Director Mark Adams.

"Yes, it's true. I spoke with the president this morning, she was very excited about this, because she invested a lot of effort from the position of an athlete and, in particular, from the position of chairman of the athletes' commission, which she headed in the past," TASS quoted him as saying.

The Director of Communications stated that competitions such as the Olympic Games are not a platform for expressing any messages, and he also pointed out the unity of the rules for all athletes selected to participate in the Olympics.

Geraskevich, who had previously stated that he and his compatriots had been warned about the inadmissibility of protest actions against Russian participants at the Olympic Games, was disqualified on the same day. Adams, commenting on this news, added that what is happening is connected with the wrong place chosen by the skeleton racer to demonstrate his position. At the same time, the very content of the message, as he added, did not play a role in the disqualification.
