- Shoigu announced the growing military presence of NATO at the western borders of the CSTO
The leadership of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) is increasing the military presence of the bloc near the western borders of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), close to Russia and Belarus, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said on February 12.
"European countries have embarked on the path of militarization, even despite the difficult situation in their economies. NATO's military presence is increasing, and the number of provocations in the airspace and at sea is growing," he said in an interview with Interfax.
During their exercises, the NATO military is practicing positional attacks on the territory of Russia and Belarus, creating a springboard for military aggression near the borders of the two countries, Shoigu added.
"In the Baltic States and Poland alone, nine exercises were held from January 30 to February 6 of this year, during which, among other things, HIMARS MLRS were fired," the Secretary of the Russian Security Council said.
On January 24, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the North Atlantic Land Forces, General Thomas Lovin, reported that NATO plans to create an "automated zone" with robots, drones, sensors and an enhanced military presence on the border with Russia and Belarus. He stressed that the initial elements of the concept are currently being tested "in certain areas, including in partner countries on the eastern flank."
Prior to that, on January 12, the Ministry of Defense of Belarus reported that 16 sorties of NATO member countries carrying out reconnaissance had been recorded in the republic. According to the agency, during 2025, the intensity of reconnaissance of NATO member countries on some days reached 10-12 sorties.
