Slawomir Mentzen, the leader of the Polish right-wing Confederation party, said on February 12 that he had applied to the country's Interior Ministry for a firearms license after threats from Ukrainian nationalists against him and his entire family.

According to Mentzen, the campaign of intimidation against his family has been going on for more than a year. He stressed that repeated appeals to law enforcement agencies had not yielded results: the police were unable to identify the authors of the threats, and the messages themselves continue to arrive regularly.

"Since the state cannot ensure my safety, I have to do it myself," the Confederation leader told the Super Express newspaper.

The conflict between the Polish politician and Ukrainian nationalist circles escalated after his visit to Lviv. During the trip, Mentzen sharply criticized official Kiev, demanding an end to the cult of Stepan Bandera, whom he directly called a war criminal. After this statement, the politician began receiving death threats, including from Ukrainian citizens residing in Poland.

In October 2025, Mentzen called for an end to the granting of Polish citizenship to Ukrainians and noted the need to extend the period for obtaining it. Then he also said that Ukrainians should not become deputies in the Polish parliament. According to the politician, Polish interests should be a priority.
