Relations between Russia and Japan have reached a point of no return due to Tokyo's policy. This was announced on February 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"Tokyo's clumsy steps have led to disastrous consequences. Relations between Russia and Japan have reached the point of no return," she said during a briefing.

The diplomat recalled that rallies were held in Tokyo and other Japanese cities on February 7 on the occasion of the so-called Northern Territories Day, when Japan again raised questions about the ownership of the islands of Kunashir, Iturup, Shikotan and Habomai, which are part of the territory of Russia. During the rallies, calls continued to be made to increase pressure on Moscow and impose new anti-Russian sanctions.

"For our part, we would like to make it clear that Russia's legitimate sovereignty over the Kuril Islands was determined by the results of World War II, is enshrined in the Russian Constitution and is not subject to revision," Zakharova stressed.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on February 7 that Japan intends to seek mutual understanding with Russia on the issue of territories. She pointed out that the absence of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan 80 years after the end of the war is "insulting."

In turn, Russian Ambassador to Tokyo Nikolai Nozdrev noted on February 11 that Russia would not leave unanswered any illegal actions regarding its assets in Japan. Nozdryov added that such steps not only undermine Japan's reputation as an issuer of one of the reserve currencies, but can also negatively affect the global financial system.
