Bild learned about the concern of Merz's entourage about Merkel's nomination for president of Germany

The entourage of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concern about the appearance of rumors about the possible nomination of former Chancellor Angela Merkel for the post of President of Germany. The Bild newspaper writes about this on February 12.

"Discussions are underway within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU), previously led by Merkel. Merz's entourage has already sounded the alarm and does not rule out that Merkel's candidacy may be proposed by the Greens, who have significant support for the ex-chancellor," the publication says.

In this case, the position of Merz, who wants to promote his candidate to the presidency, would be extremely difficult. It is known that relations between Merz and Merkel remain tense, since in 2002 she deprived him of the post of head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag, and he temporarily retired from politics.

Among the possible candidates from the CDU are Minister of Education Karin Prin and Chairman of the Bundestag Julia Kleckner. The Federal Assembly, which elects the president, gives the CDU/CSU advantages, but much depends on the position of other parties.

Amid rumors, the CDU plans to nominate its own candidacy in the coming weeks, despite the fact that presidential elections will be held only in February 2027. Merkel's activity is of additional concern, as she will take part in the CDU party congress on February 20-21 for the first time since leaving the post of chancellor. At the same time, Merkel's office denied her plans to run for president of Germany, calling the rumors "ridiculous."

In November 2025, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel called fake reports that she blamed Poland and the Baltic states for the aggravation of the Ukrainian crisis. She added that it was just a discussion about chronological events that are described in her book Freiheit ("Freedom").
