Every year, on the eve of Great Lent, the Orthodox remember all Christians who have died since time immemorial. In 2026, Myasopustnaya Ecumenical Parental Saturday will be celebrated on February 14, one week before the start of Lent and a few days before Maslenitsa. When exactly to commemorate the dead in 2026, how to spend this day according to church rules and what prohibitions are important to observe, read the Izvestia article.

Universal Parents' Saturday – 2026: when is it celebrated and who is commemorated

In the Orthodox tradition, there are eight special days a year when the Church strictly commemorates the dead. These are the so-called parental Saturdays: Myasopustnaya, three Saturdays of the second, third and fourth weeks of Great Lent, Radonitsa, Trinity Parental Saturday, Memorial Day of Orthodox Soldiers and St. Demetrius Parental Saturday. These days, believers pray not only for their parents and loved ones, but "for all Christians who have died from time immemorial."

Two of these dates have a special status and are called Ecumenical Parental Saturdays — Myasopustnaya and Troitskaya. They are dedicated to prayer for all Orthodox Christians who have ever lived on earth, as well as those who died an unnatural death - those who died at sea and in the mountains, in fires and in war, those who died of hunger and cold, those who died in a foreign land, as well as under any other tragic circumstances.

In 2026, the Myasopust Universal Parental Saturday falls on February 14th. This is the first general memorial day of the year, it takes place a week before the beginning of Lent.

The second Ecumenical Parents' Saturday, Trinity Saturday, will be celebrated on May 30, 2026, on the eve of the feast of the Holy Trinity.

The name "Myasopustnaya" is associated with the church charter — a week before Lent, believers begin to gradually give up meat before Easter. The very root "empty" in the old church speech means precisely "abandonment", "cessation" of eating certain foods.

Universal Parents' Saturday – 2026: how to properly commemorate the dead

The tradition of special memorial Saturdays has its roots in the ancient apostolic tradition — Christians gathered together on certain days and went to cemeteries to remember their deceased brothers in the faith. In the 5th century, this custom was enshrined in the Jerusalem Rule of St. Sava the Consecrated. In many ways, it remains unchanged today.

The day before, on Friday evening, they serve a great memorial service (parastas). In this service:

  • They read special funeral prayers.;
  • they perform a proskomedia with a named commemoration;
  • They accept notes with the names of the deceased, who are especially asked to be remembered.

On Myasopustnaya Saturday itself, a funeral Divine Liturgy and a general memorial service are celebrated in the morning. Orthodox Christians on this day pray not only for their relatives, but also for everyone for whom there is no one left to light a candle and send a note. At home, prayers are read "Rest, Lord, the souls of Your departed servants ...", canons about the deceased — for "many" or for one person.

On parents' Saturday, believers bring lean foods to the temple: cereals, bread, fruits, sweets, sunflower oil, etc. They are placed on the eve — a special table with a crucifix, where candles are also inserted for the repose. Previously, a common memorial meal was prepared from the brought products, today it is more often a donation for the benefit of the temple and those in need.

After the service, it is customary to visit cemeteries, tidy up graves, remove garbage, and fix crosses and fences. You can briefly pray in your own words or according to the prayer book, stand quietly and just remember the departed. The church emphasizes that the main commemoration is still performed in the temple, and prayer in the cemetery is only a continuation of worship, but not its replacement.

A modest memorial table is served at home, usually without frills. The traditional dish is kutya, a porridge made from whole grains of wheat or rice with honey, nuts, and dried fruits.

Memorial and fast dates in February 2026

In 2026, the key dates associated with Myasopustnaya Saturday, Maslenitsa, and the beginning of Lent are as follows:

  • February 14 — Myasopust Universal Parents' Saturday;
  • February 15 is Myasopust Sunday, which is also called the Week of the Last Judgment. After that day, the church regulations no longer require the consumption of meat until the Easter holiday itself.;
  • February 16-22 is Shrovetide Week, a time when meat is already excluded, but dairy products, eggs and pancakes with raw and sweet fillings are still allowed. In folk tradition, this week is associated with the departure of winter, but from the point of view of the church calendar, this is the last "cheese" week before lent.;
  • Lent begins on Monday, February 23, the longest and strictest period of the year, preparing believers for the celebration of the Main Christian holiday, Easter, which in 2026 will fall on April 12.

What not to do on Universal Parental Saturday — recommendations and prohibitions

The main inner mood of this day is a quiet but active participation in the fate of the deceased through prayer and good deeds. Therefore, on a holiday it is not recommended to turn commemoration into a noisy feast with alcohol and excess food.

What else can not be done on the Meat Saturday:

  • arranging "treats" for the deceased on graves, leaving food and alcohol as gifts to the ancestors — the Church considers these customs to be pagan remnants and does not associate them with Orthodox commemoration.;
  • quarreling, sorting out relationships, raising old grievances — on memorial day, such conflicts are especially painful for both the living and the memory of the departed.;
  • to indulge in grief, to think only about death and loss — the Christian tradition speaks about the continuation of human life after death, therefore excessive despair is considered harmful.;
  • to get involved in fortune-telling "for the dead", to turn to various "magical" practices — such superstitions contradict the church's understanding of commemoration.

The Myasopust Universal Parents' Saturday on February 14, 2026 is a reminder that the connection with the departed does not end. As long as they are remembered and prayed for, this invisible thread persists.

Earlier, Izvestia told when Russians will celebrate Maslenitsa in 2026.
