The sharp increase in tariffs for housing and communal services in Russia needs to be slowed down, this should not happen. This was announced on February 12 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"It's so drastic (the increase in housing and communal services. It shouldn't be, you know. <...> We will monitor the situation very carefully now, of course, this is an important topic on the agenda," he said during a briefing.

Peskov added that the practice of reviewing citizens' appeals, including on a Direct line, allows us to deal with each individual case in detail.

On February 10, the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia announced that it was beginning to check utility tariffs in a number of regions of the country. The purpose of the inspections is to assess the economic feasibility of the cost of electricity, heat, gas, water supply and sanitation services. The FAS also recalled that from January 1, 2026, the base rate of value-added tax (VAT) increased by 2%, which should have led to a corresponding tariff adjustment.

Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said on February 10 that all State Duma deputies advocate the introduction of special control over tariffs for housing and communal services. According to him, regional energy commissions often make decisions on tariff increases unreasonably.
