Moscow is counting on the restoration of the full-fledged status of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the international Olympic movement and is seeking the return of the rights of Russian athletes. This was announced on February 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"We look forward to restoring the full-fledged status of the Russian Olympic Committee as soon as possible. For our part, we will contribute to this in every possible way," she said.

Zakharova added that the opening of the Olympics is always a celebration of sports, which should remain a symbol of unity, striving for excellence, fair struggle and respect for the values and foundations of the Olympic movement.

"We are convinced that sport should remain neutral, in the best sense of the word, and international sports competitions should be open to all athletes without exception," she added.

ROC head Mikhail Degtyarev said at a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports on February 11 that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) might consider restoring ROC status in April or May.
