Russia emphasizes to the Japanese side that Russian sovereignty over the Kuril Islands is not subject to revision. This was announced on February 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"For our part, we would like to make it clear that Russia's legitimacy and sovereignty over the Kuril Islands were determined by the results of World War II, and are enshrined in the Russian Constitution and are not subject to revision," Zakharova said during a briefing.

According to her, Japan continues to refer to the Kuril Islands as "its northern territory," and Japanese politicians have made comparisons with the conflict in Ukraine. According to Zakharova, such a comparison is inappropriate and does not correspond to reality in any way.

"The more this ridiculous parallel is drawn, the more our foreign offices in Tokyo will remind the official Japanese authorities of what is really happening in Ukraine: terrorist attacks, extremist attacks, killings of civilians, bullying of people, and so on," she said.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on February 7 that Japan intends to seek mutual understanding with Russia on the issue of territories. She pointed out that the absence of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan 80 years after the end of the war is "insulting."
