Zakharova criticized Callas for the EU's conditions on Ukraine
The intention of the head of the European Diplomacy, Kai Kallas, to prepare a set of requirements for Russia in Ukraine demonstrates the desire of the European Union (EU) to prevent the conflict from ending by any means. This was announced on February 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Actually, normal people should maintain peace, probably, in any case, as the main goal, task, as the point to which they should strive, this landmark, which they should look at and build their steps along. But no, from the EU's point of view, the desire for peace should be conditioned by the requirements," she said.
Zakharova added that the actions of Callas and the EU actually prevent Kiev from making compromises to resolve the conflict and indicate the intention of the European bureaucracy to prevent the end of hostilities by any means.
"Until the EU understands that eliminating the root causes of the Ukrainian conflict is not a concession to Russia, but a contribution to long—term stability and security on the European continent, there is no need to talk about their role in a peaceful settlement in any capacity," she added.
Military analyst Alexander Merkouris said on February 11 that the anti-Russian statements by Kai Kallas are aimed at disrupting any attempts at interaction between Russia and the EU. In addition, the analyst added that Callas is unhappy that some Western leaders have changed their position and started looking for common ground with Moscow.
On February 10, Callas stated that the EU should have a list of requirements for the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian settlement. She noted that first it is necessary to take the consent of the Europeans to make a decision. And for this, too, there are conditions that should not be imposed on Ukrainians.
