The political scientist stated Kiev's desire to replace NATO membership with the EU.
Ukraine has intensified the topic of accelerated accession to the European Union (EU), as it considers it as a possible alternative to NATO membership, which is currently unattainable. This was announced on February 12 by political scientist Nikolai Topornin.
"Trying to come up with some kind of workaround can be expensive. Firstly, it is unfair to the EU countries. Secondly, other candidates will ask: and how are we worse?" he said in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
The expert believes that the intensification of the topic of European integration is due to the fact that the Kiev authorities are finally convinced of the unattainability of NATO membership. At the same time, in his opinion, Ukraine's allies realize that it is impossible to make an exception for Kiev from the pan-European procedures, even if there is political will.
Topornin recalled that Ukraine is required to carry out reforms in 36 areas, and only the fight against corruption, according to his assessment, may take several years.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on January 23 that his country does not intend to accept Ukraine into the EU within the next hundred years. He also added that Budapest is not against Kiev's financing from those willing to help, but stressed that such actions should not threaten the integrity of the European Union.
