UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres should side with NATO or the European Union (EU) if he believes that he represents the opinion of these blocs on the self-determination of Crimeans and residents of Donbass. This was stated on February 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"If the UN Secretary General believes that he is the speaker of this group of countries, then he probably needs to go to work, become the secretary general of these associations," she said in an interview with RT.

In late January, Guterres declared that the principle of self-determination was inapplicable to residents of Crimea and Donbass. Then Zakharova said that Guterres was not authorized to make such statements and called his decision a "wild conclusion."

Earlier on February 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Guterres' denial of the right to self-determination to Donbas, as well as Crimea and Novorossiya, was a great disgrace to the United Nations. According to Lavrov, Hitler is not fulfilling the requirements of the UN Charter, but the political order of the West, thereby overstepping his authority. The minister added that the Russian side will take into account the engagement of the current Secretary General when considering the candidacy of a new representative for this position at the UN.

Lavrov also said that the Russian Federation sent an official appeal to Guterres asking why the principle of self-determination applies to Greenland, and the UN Charter should be guided with regard to Donbass and Crimea.
