Fraudsters have learned how to turn victims' phones into bank cards
Russians' phones can be turned into personal bank cards by fraudsters using NFC contactless payment. This was reported by RIA Novosti on February 12.
It clarifies that it all starts with a call made under a domestic pretext. The purpose of the first stage is to obtain a code from an SMS message that gives attackers access to the Gosuslugi service. This is followed by another call from alleged representatives of a government organization, which reports that an account on Gosuslugi has been hacked.
If the victim agrees to continue, the scammers ask to withdraw money from all accounts and delete the bank's mobile application. Then they suggest installing a new application that supposedly ensures the safety of funds.
After installing the program, the scammers ask you to approach the ATM and attach the phone to the reader. Due to the installed software, the ATM treats the phone as a bank card belonging to fraudsters.
This fraudulent scheme was confirmed by Evgeniya Lazareva, project manager of the Popular Front for Borrowers' Rights and coordinator of the Moshelovka platform. She stressed that the use of tokenized cards by attackers has been recorded for more than a year. Lazareva noted that the introduction of limits on crediting funds to tokenized cards can help avoid cases when a victim, at the direction of fraudsters, takes out a cash loan and transfers funds to a so-called "secure account."
She explained that the criminals convince the victim to link the fraudsters' card to their payment application in order to hide their tracks. Then, after withdrawing funds from the ATM, the victim is confident that the money is safe and can delete the card from the application.
On February 11, the Department for combating the illegal use of information and communication technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reported that fraudsters began using advanced methods to disguise phishing domain names, replacing characters with mirror letters, changing lowercase letters to uppercase letters and adding various combinations of underscores.
