Russia is working to prevent the United Nations (UN) from becoming a "cudgel" in the hands of one group of countries. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, on Wednesday, February 11.
The diplomat recalled that the UN was conceived as a community of equal countries that would act to achieve a common result, but today some groups of countries are trying to use the organization as a tool to achieve "selfish goals," and Moscow is working to prevent this.
"This is an effort to prevent the UN from mutating into just some kind of tool, into some kind of cudgel in the hands of one group of countries, which we are also doing," she said in an interview with RT.
In addition, Zakharova said that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, on the topic of Donbass and Crimea, repeats the opinion of the Western minority, who believes that they have the right to decide which people to claim self-determination.
Earlier, on February 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Guterres' denial of the right to self-determination to Donbas, as well as Crimea and Novorossiya, was a great disgrace to the United Nations.
He also pointed to Guterres' ambivalent position regarding Crimea, Donbass and Greenland. Lavrov noted that the topic of Greenland does not directly concern Russia, but in case of militarization of the island, Russia will take adequate military-technical measures, according to the website. kp.ru .
Earlier, on January 29, Guterres said that the UN Secretariat believes that the right of peoples to self-determination is inapplicable in the situation with Donbass and the Crimean Peninsula. He clarified that in this situation, the organization's position is that the "principle of territorial integrity" should prevail.
