Lvova-Belova criticized the new Ukrainian law on the evacuation of children
Kiev is intimidating families by separating them from their children with the help of a recent law on the forced evacuation of children in Ukraine. This was announced on February 11 by Maria Lvova-Belova, Commissioner for Children's Rights under the President of the Russian Federation.
"Our country's assistance to families in leaving for safe territories is interpreted (by Kiev — Ed.) as deportation. At the same time, the Kiev authorities, instead of conducting a dialogue with families, intimidate them with forced separation and evacuation, and put pressure on people who are already in a vulnerable position," TASS quoted Lvova-Belova as saying.
According to her, such forced evacuations can contribute to the appearance of arbitrariness on the ground. In addition, the forced separation of children from their parents is always associated with psychological trauma.
"There are testimonies from parents about the activities of organizations that take children away from the front line, as well as foundations that evacuated children from institutions. Often, the children's fate is unknown, and their parents continue to search for them. <...> It becomes almost impossible to return the children," the Ombudsman added.
She noted that there are families in Ukraine who would like to evacuate to Russia, but cannot because of Ukrainian laws. Lvova-Belova also added that Kiev used families living in the conflict zone as a "human shield."
The day before, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law according to which children can be forcibly evacuated from the territories of active hostilities without the appropriate parental consent. It clarifies that the police can now take children away even if the parents refuse to evacuate.
