Harvesting of coniferous tree seeds began in Crimea
Coniferous tree seeds have been harvested in Crimea to restore forests. The Crimean pine remains the main species for planting.
The Sudak forestry uses Sudak pine. This rare tree is listed in the Red Book of Russia, writes IA SevastopolMedia with reference to the Republican Ministry of Natural Resources.
The agency said that the cones are harvested manually, paying special attention to their appearance. The scales should be closed or slightly open, but slightly. Cones are not taken from the ground, as they are already empty or have lost their quality.
The cones are then placed in a single layer in a cone dryer. They are kept at room temperature and suitable humidity. After the cone dries, its scales open, and seeds begin to fall out. The process takes several weeks.
The collection and processing of seeds is planned to be completed before spring. This year, as part of the federal Forest Conservation project, Krymles plans to collect more than 4,000 kg of seeds from various tree species, including common ash, almond and silver loch.
Earlier it was reported that in Crimea, a chestnut tree with five trunks, planted in 1829 and recognized as a natural monument in 1972, had to be cut down due to a disease that affected it. An examination in 2022 revealed that mushrooms appeared inside the trunk of the chestnut tree. In 2025, the chestnut tree had no foliage in the spring.
