Over the past day, 222 traffic accidents occurred on Russian roads, in which 16 people were killed and 283 injured. 13 of the dead were passengers and drivers. This was reported to Izvestia on February 11 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

There were 14 accidents involving buses, in which one person was killed, and 22 more road users, including one child, needed medical attention. Eight bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by their drivers.

As a result of 70 accidents involving pedestrians, 31 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 39 outside their area of operation, three people were killed, and 67 more were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 16 child pedestrians, half of whom were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places.

Over the past day, 28 accidents involving minors were registered, in which 32 young road users, including 16 passengers, were injured. A two-year-old girl passenger of a passenger car was killed.

In the Republic of Bashkortostan, a 33-year-old female driver of a passenger car, which was purchased almost a year ago and has not yet been duly registered, drove into the oncoming lane, where she collided with another passenger car. The daughter of the perpetrator of the collision, born in 2023, who was transported in a child restraint but was not wearing a seat belt, died in a car accident. The female driver herself and her three other minor passengers, two sons born in 2017 and a third son born in 2020, were hospitalized with injuries.

One of the injured 8-year-old twin brothers was transported in the front passenger seat, while the other two children were in the passenger compartment behind the driver next to their dead sister. All the injured young passengers were in the car at the time of the accident, in violation of the rules for the safe transportation of children, without using child restraints and seat belts. The driver's license has not been issued to the culprit of the incident before.

The State Traffic Inspectorate urges citizens who have not been trained in driving schools and have not received a driver's license, as well as those who have been deprived of their rights, to refrain from trying to get behind the wheel and drive onto public roads. By their reckless actions, such drivers endanger not only their own lives and health, but also the lives and health of other road users, including their passengers, the agency notes.

"We also remind drivers that one of the most vulnerable categories among underage road users are child passengers. When traveling with them, avoid risky driving, exceeding the speed limit, sudden lane changes, overtaking, and other dangerous maneuvers. Of course, children should be transported in compliance with all applicable safety requirements," said Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich, head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has prepared a draft order, which defines a list of indicators, criteria and frequency of evaluation of the effectiveness of driving schools in Russia. As clarified on February 4, the list of assessment criteria includes, among other things, the results of exams and the percentage of graduates from the total number in a particular driving school who successfully passed theory and practice on the first attempt.
