The urologist told about the causes of male infertility
The causes of male infertility may be genetic abnormalities or obesity. Dmitry Korolev, a urologist, andrologist, associate professor at the Institute of Urology and Human Reproductive Health at Sechenov University, told Izvestia on January 12.
According to the doctor, 17.6% of the world's population is considered infertile. Currently, 50% of the male population is infertile.
"The main cause of infertility in men is some kind of genetic abnormality. For example, Klinefelter syndrome is the presence of an extra X chromosome in a person. This leads to underdevelopment of the testicles — they cannot produce sperm," he said.
As Korolev noted, one of the factors that affects infertility in men is varicocele, which causes an increase in temperature in the scrotum due to impaired venous blood flow. This creates a so-called greenhouse effect, which prevents the normal maturation of sperm and leads to infertility.
In addition, obesity contributes to a decrease in testosterone and an increase in estrogen levels in men. Also, disorders of spermatogenesis are caused by concomitant diseases, such as hypertension or diabetes mellitus, the doctor added.
"In 45% of clinical cases, one factor cannot be identified. We call such infertility idiopathic, when patients come with an unclear pathospermia — either the number of spermatozoa or their concentration is reduced," the specialist said.
However, as Korolev emphasized, in Russia, urologists are still able to cure infertility, which is associated with varicocele, by surgery. If the reason is hormonal imbalance or male menopause, then there are several options to increase a man's testosterone levels: either by stimulating his own endogenous testosterone, or by injecting synthesized testosterone.
"Assisted reproductive technologies are widely used today. They make it possible, even with poor spermogram results, to select a sperm that will be morphologically and functionally suitable for fertilizing an egg," the urologist said.
At the same time, for a comprehensive effect, the doctor also advised to reduce body weight, follow a healthy diet and be physically active.
An obstetrician-gynecologist, gynecologist-endocrinologist, and a leading specialist in the Semeynaya clinic network, Maria Bakhmetyeva, told Izvestia on November 24 that an adequate examination would help significantly reduce the risks to the health of the baby and the expectant mother. According to her, it is necessary to eliminate alcohol and smoking, ensure moderate physical activity, and normalize sleep and wakefulness. In addition, you should start taking some vitamins, Bakhmetyeva added.
