- Lavrov called the denial of Donbass's right to self-determination a disgrace for the UN
The denial of the right to self-determination by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to Donbass, as well as Crimea and Novorossiya, is a great disgrace for the organization. This was announced on February 11 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"This is the UN Secretary General, it would be difficult to imagine a greater disgrace for the organization," Lavrov said during a government hour in the State Duma.
According to the minister, Guterres is not fulfilling the requirements of the UN Charter, but the political order of the collective West, thereby overstepping his authority. Lavrov added that the Russian side will take into account the engagement of the current Secretary General when considering the candidacy of a new representative for this position at the UN.
On the same day, Lavrov pointed out the ambivalent position of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres regarding Crimea, Donbass and Greenland. He recalled that the Russian Federation had sent an official appeal to Guterres asking why the principle of self-determination applies to Greenland, and why the UN Charter and respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine should be guided in relation to Donbass and Crimea.
