- Lavrov announced possible military measures by Russia in the event of the militarization of Greenland.
Russia will take adequate military-technical measures in the event of the militarization of Greenland and the creation of military capabilities there aimed at the Russian Federation. This was announced on February 11 by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"In the event of the militarization of Greenland and the creation of military capabilities there aimed at Russia, we will take adequate countermeasures, including military-technical measures," Lavrov said.
At the same time, he stressed that the Greenland issue does not directly concern Russia.
"The United States, Denmark, and Greenland must figure it out for themselves, taking into account the opinions of the island's residents, who have been treated rather cruelly by official Copenhagen for many years and decades, one might say, as second—class people," the Russian Foreign Minister noted.
Lavrov added that there are sufficient facts of such an attitude. At the same time, he stressed Russia's principled position.: The Arctic must remain a zone of peace and cooperation.
Russian Ambassador to Copenhagen Vladimir Barbin said on February 6 that it would be inappropriate to interfere in the situation around Greenland from the outside. According to the ambassador, the situation around Greenland is a matter for Denmark, the island and the United States, which are able to find a solution.
Earlier in the day, Barbin also said that it was too early to talk about the consequences of the situation around Greenland for Russia's security. He clarified that for a substantive analysis of the possible military and political consequences for Russia, the crisis should be clarified. On February 2, Lavrov confirmed that Russia assumes that the tension around Greenland is not related to its activities.
