Russians were given recommendations to prevent infection with the Nipah virus
The National Institute of Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands (RIVM) has issued recommendations for people planning trips to regions where the Nipah virus is spreading. This was announced on February 11 by the institute's press secretary Harald Wichel.
According to him, to reduce the risk of infection with the Nipah virus, travelers traveling to West Bengal should avoid contact with animals, their secretions, sputum or blood. It is also recommended not to eat unwashed foods and foods that may be contaminated with saliva or animal secretions. Date juice is among the dangerous products.
"Before eating vegetables or foods, they should be washed and cooked. It is also necessary to avoid contact with infected people," Vikhel explained in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Travelers are also advised to avoid contact with people who may have signs of infection, as well as not to touch animals that may be carriers of the virus. RIVM clarified that the Nipah virus does not circulate in the Netherlands, as there are no orchards in the country that could be a source of the virus' spread.
In response to cases of infection with the Nipah virus among medical workers in the Indian state of West Bengal, Asian authorities, including Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia, announced increased sanitary control measures. The World Health Organization classifies the Nipah virus as one of the most dangerous in the world. Currently, there are no drugs or vaccines for it. Nipah can cause fever and encephalopathy, leading to brain damage and a high mortality rate of 40% to 75%.
On January 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated a low risk of further spread of the Nipah virus, but stressed that due to insufficient knowledge of the virus, there is a possibility of other outbreaks. WHO spokesman Tarik Zhazarevich said that Nipah has a mortality rate of 40 to 75%, depending on the strain of the virus and the level of medical care.
To prevent infection, the organization recommends boiling date palm juice, thoroughly washing and peeling fruits before use, and discarding fruits with signs of bat bites.
