Mikhail Kalyakin, ornithologist and director of the Zoological Museum of Lomonosov Moscow State University, said on February 11 that more than 44 million sparrows live in the Russian Federation after the annual census of sparrows in the country, during which participants estimate the number of house and field birds.

"For the European part of Russia, the figures are relatively clear — about 20 million house and field. In the Asian part, we can only extrapolate this information, and then carefully state that another 2-3 million can be added to both types for the Asian part," Kalyakin said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The ornithologist noted that there are other species in Russia, but they do not participate in the census and their number can only be estimated approximately: red sparrow — no more than 5 thousand, black—breasted sparrow - 20-30 thousand pairs.

It became known on February 5 from a survey conducted by the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation that about 90% of Russian residents support the life of crows and pigeons in an urban environment, considering them part of the established ecosystem. As part of the sociological survey, about 8.1 thousand questionnaires were received from residents from 88 regions of Russia.
