- The State Duma announced the expectation of lower prices for cucumbers at the end of February.
The increase in prices for cucumbers to 300 rubles per 1 kg is due to seasonal factors, and their cost is expected to decrease with the onset of warming in February and March. This was announced on February 11 by Yulia Ogloblina, Deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Agrarian Issues.
"With the onset of warming in late February and early March, we will see a stabilization and a gradual decrease in prices," she said in an interview with TASS.
She clarified that in winter, the bulk of fresh cucumbers in Russia come from greenhouses, and their production directly depends on energy costs, and due to the cold winter and low temperatures, even in the southern regions, energy consumption has increased.
In addition, the deputy noted that Russian greenhouses are adapting not only to the climate, but also to changes in consumer preferences. More and more greenhouses are abandoning long-fruited cucumber varieties in favor of short-fruited hybrids, which are crisper, easier to slice and preserve, and also do not taste bitter. Packaging materials are also being improved, which reduce transportation losses, but also require additional costs.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the "Results of the Year" on December 19, 2025, stated that all government policy, including pricing and social policy, should be based on the well-being of the family. He acknowledged that rising prices for certain products, such as chicken meat, are seriously hitting families' budgets. At the same time, Putin cited the example of the situation with eggs, where, after criticism, prices were reduced by 10-16%.
