Frequent use of whitening pastes can cause the development of hyperesthesia, in which teeth react acutely to cold or hot. Pavel Lysenkov, a dental therapist and periodontist at SM-Dentistry, told Izvestia about this on February 12.

According to the expert, bleaching pastes do not change the natural color of the enamel, but only more intensively remove the surface plaque. The enamel itself does not break down, but in the presence of micro—damage or thinning of tooth tissues, hyperesthesia may develop - a condition in which teeth begin to react acutely to cold, hot or sweet.

As the doctor noted, special care should be taken when using pastes with a high level of abrasiveness (RDA). The higher its index, the higher the likelihood of discomfort and sensitivity, Lysenkov said.

"In the absence of contraindications and after consultation with a dentist-therapist, bleaching pastes can be applied in courses, within a week, and then change the toothpaste. It can be replaced with means to strengthen the enamel or to maintain gum health," he said.

The doctor also added that the choice of oral care products should be individual. The consultation of a specialist and regular professional oral hygiene twice a year help to maintain the health of teeth and their natural shade without risk to the enamel, Lysenkov emphasized.

On February 9, Victoria Karatayeva, the chief dentist of All Yours Dentistry, reported that one of the unobvious provocateurs of enamel destruction is the habit of washing down hot food with cold drinks, as temperature fluctuations increase sensitivity and can provoke microcracks on the enamel. Another reason is acidic foods and drinks: water with lemon in the morning, citrus smoothies, sugar—free sodas, the dentist added.
