The European Union (EU) is doing stupid things, said Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, on Tuesday, February 10, commenting on the association's intention to impose sanctions on ports in third countries.

"I just don't understand them. On the one hand, they complain that they need to start talking to Russia, that it's impossible to continue living like this, that they have constant problems with energy supplies and payments, and that they're having as much trouble as we are. On the other hand, they're continuing to build up the package for the 20th, 21st, and 22nd years.", — said the senator in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to the politician, the generation of current European leaders has completely lost touch with reality. Jabarov called for a calm attitude and a tough response to attempts to restrict Russia's foreign economic activity.

Earlier, on February 9, Reuters reported that EU countries were planning to impose sanctions on third-country ports for operations with Russian oil as part of a potential 20th package of sanctions against Russia. The publication notes that these measures may affect harbors such as Kulevi and Karimun, which are located on the territory of Georgia and Indonesia, respectively, the NSN reports. Banks of third countries may also be included in the new package of anti-Russian sanctions, according to 360.ru .

The head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen announced on February 6 that the 20th package of sanctions against Russia would include a complete ban on the transportation of Russian oil. According to her, these measures are aimed at further increasing pressure on the Russian energy sector. They, as von der Leyen stressed, will also limit the possibility of circumventing previously imposed EU sanctions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on February 9 that the West, striving to dominate the energy and oil industries, does not want to give up its once dominant positions. According to him, the struggle for primacy among European states has become especially obvious with the advent of the Donald Trump administration. The minister added that the United States suppresses competitors by unfair methods, imposing sanctions against Russian oil companies.
