Europol uncovered a cocaine smuggling network in Iceland
European police investigators have uncovered a criminal group involved in cocaine smuggling from South America to Iceland. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on February 10.
"As a result of the measures taken against this network earlier this month, 24 arrests were made. 11 of those arrested were in Iceland, six in Lithuania, and four in Spain. Two were arrested in Belgium and another in Denmark," Europol said in a statement.
The agency added that the couriers transported cocaine to Iceland in their luggage in a hidden way, or "swallowing packages of the drug." Europol noted that the proceeds from the sale of substances were "laundered through real estate and other assets in Lithuania."
Earlier that day, the Austrian State Criminal Department uncovered a professionally organized drug trafficking network and seized 180 kg of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine. Three young men, who are currently no more than 25 years old, have become suspects in drug trafficking.
