The lawyer spoke about the signs of turning a blog into a business
A blog can be recognized as an entrepreneurial activity if there is regular monetization, profit-making goals, and interaction with advertisers or platforms, which entails tax and legal obligations for the content author. Ekaterina Alexandrovich, a lawyer and human rights defender, a member of the Adyghe Republican Bar Association, reported this in a conversation with Izvestia on February 11.
According to the expert, a blog ceases to be a hobby if the income from it is systematic and is associated with advertising integrations, the sale of goods and services, paid subscriptions or donations.
The lawyer noted that not only cash receipts are recognized as income, but also barter, gifts used for commercial purposes, as well as crypto payments and rewards from foreign platforms.
The expert also recalled the tax obligations of bloggers, which depend on the chosen form of activity — from personal income tax or professional income tax to taxes of individual entrepreneurs and legal entities.
"Compliance with tax requirements reduces the risks of fines, blocking payments, and loss of trust from advertisers," Ekaterina Alexandrovich emphasized.
Failure to pay taxes can lead to additional charges, account blocking and, in some cases, criminal liability.
"Control by platforms and tax authorities is increasing, and the anonymity of online payments is gradually disappearing," the lawyer concluded.
