Newfangled bubble tea and street food can have a negative impact on human health, increasing the burden on the cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract due to its high calorie content. Gulnara Orlova, cardiologist, Director of Insurance Products and Customer Experience Development at Rosgosstrakh Life Insurance Company, told about this on February 11.

According to the expert, bubble tea is saturated with sugar and carbohydrates in the form of sweet syrups, creamy additives and starchy tapioca balls (obtained from the roots of the cassava plant). It is specified that one large serving of a drink can contain several tablespoons of sugar.

"To make it easier, choose options without a creamy base, reduce the sweetness level and take a smaller volume. And in the heat, bubble tea can easily be replaced with classic green tea without additives," she said.

Another newfangled high—calorie dish, according to Orlova, is a smash burger. The dish contains a lot of salt, an excess of which can lead to increased blood pressure, edema and increased stress on the cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, this product should not be combined with high-calorie side dishes and sugary drinks, the doctor emphasized.

"The main secret of the smash burger is the way it is prepared: the patty is pressed against a hot surface, creating a crispy caramelized crust. This enhances the taste, but forms carcinogens harmful to health," Orlova added.

In addition, corn dogs and bright sweets like waffles with various fillers can also give a quick "pleasure effect". According to the expert, the problem with such snacks is that sugar quickly enters the bloodstream, causing sudden energy fluctuations.

"Corn dogs are harmful because of their high calorie content: fried dough contains a lot of fat, which can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases if consumed frequently. In order not to overload the body, choose small portions, eat slowly and treat such dishes as a rare pleasure rather than a daily habit," she said.

According to the cardiologist, street food is not harmful to health if consumed consciously. So, small portions, moderation in sauces, daytime and simple meals during the rest of the day help to avoid overload.

However, if abdominal heaviness, heartburn, headache, increased drowsiness or sleep problems appear after consuming such products, you should consult a doctor. Such reactions are often associated not only with the food itself, but also with individual metabolic characteristics or possible diseases, the expert concluded.

On February 8, it was reported that researchers learned about the effect of meal timing on metabolic health. Thus, eating earlier in the day is associated with better indicators of metabolic health compared with a late meal, even within the framework of interval nutrition.
