The fisherman reported a reduction in cod stocks in the Barents Sea
The stock of cod in the Barents Sea has decreased due to climate change. This was announced on February 10 by Valentin Balashov, Chairman of the Interregional Association of Coastal Fishermen of the Northern Basin.
"In the 2010s, there was a maximum level of ODE (total allowable catch. — Ed.) and reached two countries, Russia and Norway, up to 1 million tons. Now the state of the commercial stock, that is, large fish, has begun to fall sharply," he said in an interview. Ura.ru .
According to him, the total allowable catch of cod in recent years has decreased from 885.6 thousand tons in 2021 to 340 thousand tons in 2025.
Balashov noted that scientists are still unable to explain the changes in the marine ecosystem. He stressed that the human impact on the reduction of reserves is minimal, as Russia and Norway are jointly managing the resource.
According to the Chairman's forecast, the number of cod in the Barents Sea will remain small in the coming years.
In early February, it was reported that in 2025, pollock supplies to the Russian market reached a record, amounting to 271 thousand tons, which is 7% more than in 2024. The Association of Pollock Miners (ADM) noted that since 2013, the volume of supplies has increased almost 4.5 times, and this is due not only to sanctions, but also to the development of domestic demand.
