FT reported a sharp drop in German confidence in the United States

Almost two thirds of German residents consider the United States to be the main threat to world peace in the coming years. This was reported on February 9 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

The survey was conducted from January 6 to January 19, and more than 1,000 people took part in it.

According to the survey, 65% of respondents identified the United States as a potential threat to global security. The attitude towards the United States in German society has noticeably deteriorated over the past two years. So, in January 2024, only 24% of respondents shared a similar point of view, and at the beginning of 2025 it was already 46%.

In addition, only 32% of the survey participants said they believe Washington is ready to come to the aid of European NATO allies in the event of a military attack. More than a third of respondents expressed doubt about the reliability of American security guarantees. Russia is still in the first place among the countries that Germans consider a threat to global stability - 81% of respondents named it. 46% of the study participants mentioned China in this context.

The respondents were also asked about the likelihood of Germany's involvement in a military conflict in the coming years. 45% consider such a scenario unlikely, while almost a third admit that the probability of war remains high. At the same time, 14% of respondents said they had already thought about the possibility of leaving the country in the event of an attack, almost half ruled out such an option for themselves.

On January 26, Politico reported on the dissatisfaction of more than 70% of Europeans with democracy in their countries. The majority of respondents (76%) said that democracy in their country is in decline. Among the respondents, 63% believe that the best years are behind them, while 77% fear that life in their country will be more difficult for the next generation.
